Erik L. Knudsen joined the Department of International Relations at Eastern Mediterranean University in 1998. Prior to that time, he was an associate professor in Switzerland at several institutions from 1986 to 1996 (The American College of Switzerland, Leysin Webster University, Geneva). In 1985, he received his PhD in Diplomatic History from the University of California, Santa Barbara, from where he also received his MA. His undergraduate work was primarily done at Indiana University where he studied Modern European and Middle Eastern History. While in Switzerland, Dr. Knudsen awarded a Fulbright-Hays scholarship for study in Pakistan (1988), received Faculty Development Funds for research in the Middle East (1990) and was given an Academic Service Award for Curriculum Development in International Political Studies (1987). His primary research emphasis is concerned with US policy in the Middle East and the political systems of Syria and Lebanon. He is currently working on a book dealing with modern Syria.
