A seminar titled “Gender and War, Gendered Impacts of War” was held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), jointly organized by the Cyprus Policy Center (CPC) and the Department of Political Science and International Relations. The opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations and Director of the CPC, who also introduced the seminar’s speaker, Prof. Dr. Dilek Cindoğlu.
Prof. Dr. Cindoğlu began her presentation by discussing the challenges faced by women in the aftermath of war. She highlighted that women often experience greater hardship and trauma compared to men due to the consequences of conflict. Focusing particularly on Syrian refugee women and local women in Turkey, Cindoğlu emphasized the competitive and strained relationships between these two groups. She explained that Syrian women, unable to find suitable positions within the labor market, often resort to marrying local Turkish men as a means of survival—an issue that places both Turkish and Syrian women in difficult positions.Concluding her presentation, Cindoğlu stressed the need for greater protection of women during and after conflicts, underlining the gendered nature of war’s impact.
During the highly interactive seminar, Prof. Dr. Dilek Cindoğlu, under the moderation of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, responded to questions from the audience regarding women’s rights and offered recommendations for improving conditions in the future.
