A panel titled “Nationalism and Culture” was held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), jointly organized by the Cyprus Policy Center (CPC), the Department of Political Science and International Relations, and the Department of Business Administration. The opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations and Director of the CPC, who also introduced the panel speakers: Prof. Dr. Ali Dayıoğlu, Prof. Dr. Nur Köprülü, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Erkut, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Gülay Umaner Duba.

The panel began with Prof. Dr. Ali Dayıoğlu’s presentation on the effects of reciprocal nationalism in Cyprus on minorities in Greece and Turkey. The second speaker, Prof. Dr. Nur Köprülü, encouraged the audience to rethink the trajectories of Arabism, with particular emphasis on the reverberations of the Arab uprisings and the Gaza war. The third speaker, Asst. Prof. Dr. Gülay Umaner Duba, emphasized unity in diversity, addressing how nationalism can be managed in multinational states. The final speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Erkut, distinguished between Ziya Gökalp’s and Wiebke Sievers’ perspectives on the importance and influence of culture, noting that Gökalp viewed culture as immutable, whereas Sievers saw it as changeable.

In the highly interactive session, under the moderation of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, the speakers responded to questions from the audience regarding their different presentations on nationalism and culture.
